What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling refers to the practice of inserting filaments, or needles, into the skin to release painful myofascial trigger points in the muscles. Dry needling induces deep tissue release, relieving pain, and improving mobility. This treatment is referred to as “dry needling” because while the technique does involve needles, it does not involve injections of any kind.  The needle itself produces the desired effects.

Benefits of Dry Needling

Dry needling is beneficial to anyone who is experiencing pain as a result of repetitive motion or acute trauma. These injuries lead to pain and inflammation, damaging the tissues of the body. When inflamed, tissue goes into a tense, protective state similar to a muscle contraction. Your muscles do this to protect against further damage. Even though your body is trying to protect itself, this tense state can be very painful. Over time, this condition will limit the amount of oxygen that can reach your muscles. Scar tissue will also begin to develop. All of these things contribute to pain and a reduction in mobility.

What Happens During Dry Needling?

During a dry needling session, filaments will be strategically inserted into contracted muscle areas. This creates a twitch reflex which will begin to break the pain cycle and decrease the muscle contractions. Over time, these sessions will lead to a drastic reduction in pain.

When you first visit our clinic, our chiropractor will evaluate your musculoskeletal system to determine whether or not dry needling is right for you. Other forms of treatment may also be considered to help bring you to a state of optimal wellness.
